****NOTE TO BUYERS - IMPORTANT****
To properly maintain her hull (direct from seller)........
The swelling as designed by Christopher Columbus Smith is to pre-soak the hull prior to summer use and post storage, all to keep the planks from swelling too tight and popping off like a wooden floor does when it gets water damage.
My method has been to store the boat on plastic covered concrete (cement floors under wood boats cause too much drying). I place 2x4 lumber under the plastic parallel to the hull as well as across the floor under and past the transom, creating a pool when filled with water. I start by filling the fwd bilge with the garden hose and the water runs right out the bottom of the boat between the planks and around the chines. All the while filling up my custom made 3.5" deep x 4' wide and 16' long swimming pool for mice. At this point the garden hose is shut off, and I have a portable bilge pump with a float that feeds the recycled water back into the boat, swelling both layers of original bottom planking.
It looks scary at first but after three days the water level rises higher up inside the hull covering everything below the waterline and stops leaking out of the bottom, I also take care not to flood out any mechanical parts, so don't forget to pull the fuse on the massive bilge pump that is installed in the boat and soak down my tools in the garage.
