This traditional 29 Vineyard Vixen canoe stern diesel auxiliary sloop built in 1976 by Marthas Vineyard Shipyard is located in Norwalk CT and seriously for sale due to health reasons.
The Vineyard Vixen is a classic Herreshoff Rozinante-inspired Hale designed double ender sloop and is both an exhilarating day sailor and a rugged, well equipped cruiser. She looks like a wooden boat inside and out but is massively overbuilt in fiberglass by Marthas Vineyard Ship Yard. The long fin keel and aggressive rudder matched with the round bottom and canoe stern make for a surprisingly lively sailor with marvelous sea keeping ability. The roller furling headsail and Dutchman main furling, along with self tailing winches make this lovely craft an easy performer.
The hull and decks are hand laid fiberglass with molded nonskid in the traffic areas for safe footing. She has a stainless steel bow rail and single wire life lines all the way back to the canoe stern, teak exterior trim, hatches, and toe rail. The large self-bailing cockpit has deep storage under the seats, an Edson wheel, binnacle, teak folding table and beverage holder. Attractive blue cockpit cushions are just the ticket for a comfortable and attractive sailing cockpit. Sheets lead to the cockpit and the usual club footed jib has been replaced with a new roller furling gear for even more ease of handling this classic single or double handed sailor.
Below, the cozy teak paneled and trimmed main and forward cabins are dry and comfortable as you would expect from this classic New England design. Two sleep forward in a large V-berth with filler to form a double berth. Storage below and shelves provide plenty of storage for clothing and personal gear. The teak paneled head with a manual marine head is to port behind a clever door that provides privacy for both the head and the forward cabin. To starboard is a hanging locker. The main cabin has the traditional settee berths port and starboard with shelves and storage lockers outboard. A traditional teak drop leaf dining table is mounted on the forward port bulkhead and folds up for storage. Dish storage or the bar is behind the table. The galley area runs along the aft bulkhead, with a large stainless steel sink, plenty of room for a cook top, and ample counter space. The classic teak ice box opens to the cabin and can be accessed from the cockpit as well. The entire interior boasts lovely teak joiner work and an inlaid teak and holly sole. The six foot headroom is adequate for most of us. Four opening ports and the forward deck hatch provide cool ventilation in the heat of summer while the Ratelco coal stove provides a lovely dry heat in the colder months.
These double ended classics are about the most graceful sailors in the under 30 foot class. Vineyard Vixens are well known for their sailing ease and efficiency. Comfortably single handed or sailed by a couple, this double ended classic is perfect for a young family. Seaworthy and snug enough to speed a week poking around the Elizabeth Islands or weekend out at Block Island, the reliable Westerbeke diesel makes getting there no problem even when the wind fails.
Independence needs some spiffing up, but is sound and well found.
